Word of the Week: Level

I’ve decided to start blogging again (for the third time now…) but I’ve recently been coming across some interesting stuff that I’d like to share without having tell a million different people, pasting different links, well you get the point. Being in software engineering, I’ve recently come across a number of good site, and these ones I’ve been trolling lately. Although reddit’s been around for a while and my classmates frequent it quite often, I’ve just never found the appeal, until now. I was linked to this plee by a friend about a programmer in industry who wants out, and was looking for some insight. I found it endearing that a bunch of “randoms” were able to gave their two cent’s, and gave him a push in the right direction, as well as humorous anecdotes on things they’ve come across. Here are a couple that I had a good laugh at:

smashthebirdy:
“… I want to do something different. I’m also at the highest position an engineer can be in my current gig, so no upward mobility. I’m already at level 80.”

Although the situation isn’t funny, I had a good chuckle at the reference to gaming.

Then there was this:

umilmi81:
The worst case I saw was that some application was putting a space ” ” in front of the primary key value. It wasn’t happening every time, just some of the time. Well rather than track down and fix the app that was doing this, they decided to just make sure to include a wildcard search in every single fucking query against the database.

select * from tableX where MyPK like ‘%’ + @SearchPK

Classy.

elbekko:
Congratulations, you’ve just made a thousand DBAs cry.

Having to do query optimization in my studies in database systems I was in shock that somebody would actually deem that an acceptable solution. I I’m sure my professor would have a fit if we ever tried to do anything like that. I then soon learned that there was a site is devoted to coding WTF’s and it’s called The Daily WTF. I had a good laugh and spent a good amount of time on there, it’s like the FailBlog for programmers, and if you don’t know what that is you need to get caught up.

Which brings me to why I even started this post in the first place, and the word of the week. I was trolling on Facebook again and I cam across a mock motivational poster which was in a group called “Do you even have a life?”.. “Im a gamer, I have plenty of lives!” I found it pretty funny.

Sometimes I wonder how many of these photos are staged, although this one’s pretty obvious. It kind of make me want to shoot a series. After all I do have a camera.

(Temporary) New Look

Recently my handcrafted theme broke *tear* for reasons unknown to me, but every thing past the «/head» tag just wouldn’t show. It shows up in other themes as you can see but just not in mine. I haven’t changed anything except the addition and removal of a JavaScript but it worked fine with it in there. It might just be a plugin that’s doing some funky jazz up in my server but that’s still under investigation.

What do you mean it’s Thursday!?

Much to my suprise it’s already Thursday. The week pretty much flew by. Assignment after assignment, and it’s still on going. I was at the school last night until about 4am working an assignment, and now I’m back bright and early for work… And to boot, I couldn’t take a wake up shower since it’s currently being fixed, over the holiday’s it started leaking into the ceiling and was looking pretty bad. But hopefully it’s fixed today so I can shower tomorrow.

Having a poor morning already I headed to work, remembered my camera, at the request of qqxk 缱绻星空 to take some the school and area in the winter. And with that I forgot my phone charger, and so I will again not be receiving any calls. I thought I got one this morning, but I couldn’t tell if was just tired, and with the battery dead I can’t check now, wait! It has just occured to me that I may have a spare battery in my bag… Now, is it charged? Most excellent it is!

And with that, back to work I go, though there isn’t much to do at the moment, there’s always something. Pictures coming to a flickr page near you.

My shnozberrys are frozen!

It’s been a while since I’ve blogged, reason being I like to try to make my postings a little meaty, but I’ve learned this kind of deters me from typing anything at all! And what the point of having a blog if you’re not going to write in it? Sadly I now have to deal with hundreds of spam comments *sigh*

In recent days the temperature has been well below -30 degrees centigrade with the wind chill and walking to class this morning was quite the excursion. Not to mention the water main burst on my route to school, which just happens to be uphill… A slippery slope to say the least.

This past weekend I cam from a Judo tournament held by the University Of Winnipeg. It was an excellent experience, and having never been out west (that being as far west in Canada I’ve ever been) it was a nice 8 hour ride with my team mates. However the refereeing of the matches was less than stellar, with mis-awarded points and constant referee conferences it was frustrating to watch. I fought in the -73kg division along with two others a 3-kyu and 5-kyu (blue and orange belt). I came away with 3rd, which should have been a 2nd at least but due to poor refereeing, said my sensei, and after seeing the video of the match, I would have to agree.

And now it’s time to hit the books again, workin’ in overload this semester, but it should be manageable since one of my courses is Intro to operating systems, and I’m quite beyond that IMHO, but it’s a course requirement and thus I have to take it, much like programming I which I had last semester. However my continuing classes are picking up where they left off and so I can’t miss a step there.

In the coming months I’m hoping to at some point get an external drive for my MBP here b/c I’ve managed to get it to a critical level with rendered videos and audio files, not to mention my photo library and photoshop edits. In the past weeks I’ve become a twitterer and more of a Web 2.0 person, as if blogging and twittering weren’t dead giveaways. I’m listening to and watch podcasts and becoming more of a Mac head. Hopefully I can afford to get an iPod Touch, or iPhone 3G to do some software development, I have some ideas I want to try and cook up. I’m also going to try my hand at photography again, I did a photo-shoot for my sister (flickr pics to come) over the break and hopefully I can startup my 365 this coming February.

With that being said, back to my studying and more frequent, although shorter blog posts to come.

Mmm Macbook Pro…

So I’ve had my new MacBook Pro now for about 3 weeks and I’m lovin’ every bit of it (MAJOR upgrade from my Toshiba Satellite A20). It runs smooth and for me, wasn’t too hard to get accustom to. I’ve Worked within Linux/Unix for quite a while, and started in Windows (like most people), so the move to OS X was inevitable, I was looking forward to it. The interface it quite streamlined in that you don’t have to deal with a “Start” menu, things I use 90% of the time like Photoshop and iTunes, eclipse, iCal, etc., are on my dock. As for the rest I just Command+Space and then type what I want. All to often I’ve been distracted by the many programs in my start menu and forget what I was even looking for… Continue reading ‘Mmm Macbook Pro…’

Code, math, code some more, math some more…

Been quite busy lately with assignments, too busy, have one due everyday since Sunday, I finish Friday, then it’s a whole new beast. In the mean time I’ve been trying to organize the Thrill The World Event for LU and it’s been going relatively smoothly I still am a little nervous about it but it should go just fine.

Currently I’m taking a break from coding an assignment for my programing class, then it’s on to my final assignment of the week discrete mathematics. I’m also still waiting for my MBP, due to an unfortunate mix-up in payment I probably won’t be getting it until early next week (I really wanted it for the TTW event, would have made my life easier…). and my Adobe Photoshop CS4 sadly won’t be arrive until a few days before Christmas! (whoa is me…). But I have a Judo tournament to look forward to, however I think it falls on a day I have two exams so hopefully I can still make it.

In the mean time I’ll just be watching this Cult of Mac slide show in the corner of my eye…

よし!頑張ります~!

8 Days and counting

On August 1st I decided I would join the thousands that have completed this project or are in the process. On this day I also decided to start a little side project after seeing this video.
